If you're planning an outdoor kitchen in Northern Virginia, running gas to the patio means checking your meter's capacity, pulling a permit, and having a licensed company do the work. Here's how it goes, start to finish.

Check your gas capacity before you buy the grill

Your home's gas meter has a limited BTU capacity. Your furnace and water heater already use part of it. Add a high-output grill, a patio heater, and a fire pit, and you can end up asking for more gas than the system can deliver.

That's why we start every outdoor gas project by adding up your total BTU load. The best time to call is the planning phase, before anything is bought. Natural gas or propane

Many homes in McLean and around Fairfax already have natural gas service, which makes it the logical choice for a permanent outdoor kitchen. It runs off the service you already have, and it means no tank swaps mid-barbecue. That convenience alone wins most homeowners over.

Propane makes sense where there's no natural gas service, or for portable setups. We install both.

Permits, licensing, and inspection

Gas line work in Virginia requires a permit, an inspection, and a properly licensed contractor. It is not handyman work. Water leaks damage floors; a gas leak can mean fire or explosion, and a badly installed appliance can mean carbon monoxide.

Every NoVA jurisdiction requires a permit for gas line work, and Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and Arlington each have their own requirements for outdoor installations. How long an outdoor gas line installation takes

Most outdoor gas line installations take one to two days, depending on distance and complexity. The sequence looks like this:

1. Utility marking. Virginia law requires underground utilities to be marked before anyone digs.

2. Excavation and pipe. We dig the trench and lay the gas-rated pipe.

3. Pressure test and inspection. The new line is pressure tested and inspected before it's covered.

4. Backfill and hookup. Once it passes, we backfill and connect your appliances.

Weather affects scheduling, especially for underground work, so plan for a dry season when you can. Spring through early fall offers the most predictable installation windows.

Annual gas line inspections

Outdoor gas lines deal with weather, ground settling, and normal wear more than indoor lines do. We recommend a yearly check to catch small issues before they become dangerous ones.
